Amsonia is named for Charles Amson, an 18th century physician. It is reputedly deer resistant. Supposedly it is also poisonous to dogs (hence its other common name of Dogbane).

Looks kind of like a crustacean to me.

My plant was starting to get large, bushy and crowded, so I decided to dig it up and divide it early this spring. Wow, what a task. Not only was it very deep rooted and, therefore, very difficult to dig out, the root ball was more like a tree trunk. I had to use one of my cross cut wood saws to cut the sucker up into three pieces. Then, after all that, I read that this plant, once established, is better left undisturbed. Oh well, I disturbed it pretty severely. Seems to be doing OK, just not blooming as profusely. I kept one of the 3 sections exposed, and unplanted in my garage for about 2 weeks, then gave it to my neighbor kind of dried out, and guess what, it’s blooming in her yard now.
