Since 'ornis' means bird, and 'gala' means 'milk', the name of this genus is 'bird's milk'.

The origin of this flower in my garden is a mystery to me. I love seeing it every spring, tucked away in the deep shadows under the Judd‘s viburnum, but I didn‘t plant it, nor did I really know what it was until I researched it for posting on „Blooming Today“. Maybe there were some stray bulbs mixed in with other bulbs that I planted. But I am delighted to have them. They close up when it is dark or cloudy, and re-open when they get enough light.
